A Vibrant Day For Pollinators and People at the Fleur De Lune/Moon Township Library Youth Event

On July 29th the Moon Township Garden Club (MTGC) presented a program in conjunction with the Moon Township Public Library in the Fleur de Lune garden at Robin Hill Park. MTGC's Youth Committee and Fleur de Lune Committee joined forces to host a story time with Megan Goode, where Miss Megan began the day with several stories focusing on bees, butterflies and pollinators. With books, puppets and conversation, Miss Megan noted the importance of pollinators to humans and to plants.
Garden Exploration and Wonder
Following story time, club members acted as garden guides, encouraging our young guests to look carefully and find pollinators. Using resource kits provided by the Club that contained hand lenses and homemade butterfly models, the students charted bees, butterflies and other organisms in their personal journal, which also contained coloring pages to complete at home. Learners also took home a craft project to create their own "pollinator wheel" showing the relationship of the world's pollinators and plants.
The children enjoyed potting their own plant to take home.
A sunny and joyful day in the garden ended with cool treats and a handmade bookmark to take home.
Community Collaboration and Learning
Planning this event in Late July deliberately allowed the children to experience the plantings, especially the colorful cottage gardens, at a robust height. Therefore feeling that the garden was alive with pollinators and getting to be hands on and surrounded by nature. Story time allowed the children ( and adults) to connect the book with the place.
The Fleur de Lune garden is in a depression and clearing within the woods, an ideal spot for pollinators to feel protected and get nourishment.
The adults and children walked around in wonder looking at clusters of diverse wildlife while marveling at their beauty.
A Day to Remember and Build Upon
The visitors to the event got to experience only a snapshot in time because both the pollinators and the plantings change throughout the seasons. That is what gives it such vibrancy. Miss Megan is discussing doing other story times in the garden to be outside and see what comes next. For this event the attendees signed up as part of the library Summer Events Schedule.
We hope that people come back repeatedly to the Fleur de Lune garden throughout the seasons. The garden is free and open to the public. Come anytime and see something different.
