On Thursday evening, June 18th, Moon Township Garden Club hosted the Petals & Pours event in the Fleur De Lune garden at Robin Hill. It was a night to enjoy a glass of wine, a bit of charcuterie and delicious cookies at a summer garden party. The verdant garden provided an environment for guests to get close to nature and an opportunity to ask questions and share points of view. Over 100 guests celebrated this special place in our community where plants, pollinators and people can thrive.
Garden party guests perused an outdoor shop full of artisanal garden themed objects crafted by members of the club such as hand-painted birdhouses, birdhouse stakes, glass plant markers, plant supports, and decoupage planter pots. Flower carts full of brightly blooming annuals were provided for purchase with members potting those plants into the hand-decorated pots. While lively music was supplied by a DJ, members of the garden club happily answered plant and club-related questions. Garden-themed gift baskets were presented to lucky raffle winners as well.
Fleur De Lune chairperson, Ellen Levin Sittig noted, "Our Club members have worked hard to organize, structure and plant this garden, thoughtfully determining what would be an appropriate design solution for a flat, semi formal de-facto walled garden nestled into a depression surrounded by mature woods and nature trails. The garden is designed to create lasting ecological and visual vibrancy, while encouraging visitors to find inspiration and get enjoyment by being in this highly accessible greenspace."
The garden club has tied the pollinator garden to their new website (moontownshipgardenclub.com) where returning visitors can find out what's in bloom and using handy QR codes, read blogs on a variety of gardening and conservation topics or even "ask the gardener" their specific questions. The Club also encourages interested gardeners of all levels to join members who volunteer in the garden each Wednesday morning from spring through the autumn to share basic maintenance tasks and interesting conversations.
Many of the plants growing in the Fleur De Lune were donated by the members themselves. For several years, members cultivated beloved varieties in their own gardens and then transplanted those species at Robin Hill, creating a cottage garden look that attracts both casual visitors and seasoned gardeners - along with a wealth of pollinators and birds. Donations from the community have also supported the garden's establishment, with recent gifts allowing for a 1000 square foot expansion at the garden's entrance that features many old-fashioned perennials and a robust shrub border. The Fleur De Lune also features an area to captivate a child's imagination, with a Caterpillar and Turtle created from plant material.
The ever-changing space has become more than simply a setting for a great party; it is a living part of the community and it embodies the Moon Township Garden Club's commitment of "Nurturing Nature and Cultivating Community" with garden visitors and our volunteers growing together and sharing throughout the year.
The volunteer-powered Petals and Pours event which hosted a diverse crowd from Moon Township and well beyond was a great time to share the joy of gardening with family and friends - old and new. All proceeds from the event will go directly to purchasing evergreens in a continuing effort to provide four season interest and create an even more diverse habitat for local wildlife.
